Participation from Preschool to High School (Two Block Session)
Thursday, October 18, 2007 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Technology in the classroom does not ensure learning. Relax and learn how to implement your high tech and low tech adaptations to increase active student participation in learning and social activities. Participants will learn how to combine technology with the learning objectives of the classroom and engage students. Learn by watching video clips of students who are passive and move toward active participation using their adaptations to engage in social or learning activities. See many case study examples that demonstrate the practical and functional uses of computer-based technology, AAC devices, and other low tech examples. Participants will receive sample adaptations.

Description and Summary of Workshop:
Technology does not ensure learning. This presenter discussed high tech and low tech adaptations to increase active student participation in learning and social activities. She combined technology with learning objectives. Many video clips to go from passive to active participatory techniques. For example, teacher-student signals to be called on in 1 minute (for lag time of creating novel response on AAC device. Three barriers: insufficient torso support, unstable item/shape, as planned or participation change. You must identify barriers, design interventions, then review and evaluate. Overlays for Intellitools can be time consuming however can be inventive. Adaptive keyboards were recommended. Intellitools teacher sharing website is an excellent resource. (eye gaze, adaptive markers, pointing and representations were also discussed
